Proximal Suspensory Desmitis in the Forelimb and the Hindlimb
نویسنده
چکیده
The suspensory ligament (SL) can be divided into three separate regions which are subject to injury: the proximal part, the body, and the branches. For clinical purposes in the forelimb the proximal part extends from approximately 4 to 12 cm distal to the accessory carpal bone, and in the hindlimb from approximately 2 to 10 cm distal to the tarsometatarsal joint. In the forelimb, the SL originates from two heads which rapidly fuse. In the hindlimb this division is less obvious. The ligament contains a variable amount of muscular tissue (2–11%), which tends to be bilaterally symmetrical. In the forelimb the SL originates from the palmar carpal ligament and the proximal aspect of the third metacarpal bone, whereas in the hindlimb it originates principally from the proximoplantar aspect of the third metatarsal bone. In the forelimb the SL is innervated by the palmar metacarpal nerves, derived from the lateral palmar nerve, which receives fibres from both the ulnar and median nerves. The hindlimb SL is innervated by the plantar metatarsal nerves, derived from the tibial nerve. The proximal SL is closely related to the palmar outpouching of the middle carpal joint in the forelimb, and the plantar outpouching of the tarsometatarsal joint in the hindlimb. Proximal suspensory desmitis (PSD) is a common injury in both forelimbs and hindlimbs of athletic horses, and may occur unilaterally or bilaterally.

Objective - The aim of this study was to measure the ratio of bone cortex (C) to bone diameter (D), (C/D) in radius/tibia, metacarpus /metatarsus and proximal phalanges in fore and hindlimbs to be used as a diagnostic guide in metabolic and nutritional diseases in Minature Donkey. Design- Experimental study Animals- Eight adult Minature donkeys. Procedures- Lateromedial, dorsopalmar and dors...

A 3-month-old Standardbred colt was examined for acute, bilateral hindlimb swelling and lameness. Serum chemistry demonstrated elevated muscle enzymes (AST, ALT, LDH and CK). Radiographs of the hindlimbs demonstrated intact proximal sesamoid bones that were displaced distally and subluxation of the pastern joints. Ultrasonography of the affected areas revealed large, diffuse hypoechoic areas in...
متن کاملShort term analgesic effect of extracorporeal shock wave therapy in horses with proximal palmar metacarpal/plantar metatarsal pain.
Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is an accepted form of treatment for chronic cases of proximal suspensory desmitis (PSD). Subjective evaluation of horses shortly after being treated with ESWT has led clinicians to comment on an immediate reduction in lameness. This study aimed to evaluate the analgesic effect of ESWT on 16 horses with PSD or PSD-like pain in a fore- or hindlimb. To obj...

متن کاملProximal Suspensory Desmitis in the Sports Horse in Forelimbs
Proximal suspensory desmitis (PSD) results in sudden onset lameness, which can be remarkably transient, resolving within 24 hours unless the horse is worked hard. In horses with more chronic injury lameness may be persistent. PSD in forelimbs occurs in horses of all ages and from all disciplines. Extravagantly moving young dressage horses and older upper level competition horses are particularl...
